Volunteering

The Self Help Community Centre is a Cambodian NGO with all Khmer employees. It is our goal to make our project sustainable by strengthening the skills of our Cambodian team. We welcome both Cambodian and International volunteers who have a range of skills, ideas, experience and knowledge in teaching, social work, HR, business, IT support, creative arts, sports, organic farming, administration and any other backgrounds that may be beneficial to our community and school.

While the time a volunteer stays varies greatly, we have found the longer the stay the better. We invite volunteers to come and volunteer for as little as a week, however if you are wanting to teach English classes we ask for a minimum commitment of three weeks as it can be very unsettling for the children having volunteers come and go. So to be assigned an English class three weeks minimum, but it you are wanting to help out with farming, art, dance, construction projects, administration tasks a week is fine.

Volunteers will need to provide a scanned image of their passport, completed application form, a police check from their country of residence and abide by our strict Child Protection Policy. The reasons for this are obvious. South-East Asia is sadly a breeding ground for child sex-crime and pedophilia and protecting our children is our highest priority.

The cost to volunteer at SHCC:
At SHCC we do not believe in charging a volunteer fee, we appreciate that by travelling to Cambodia to volunteer you are already paying a lot to get here and donating your time and skills. However, we do encourage our volunteers to fundraise a donation on behalf of SHCC prior to leaving their home country. You maybe be surprised just how many people whether friends, family or work colleagues are willing to support your volunteering spirit by donating to the project you are going to support.
Unlike many other organisations, you can rest assured 100% of your donation will go back into SHCC, the students, the teachers, the programmes, projects and the community.

As we appreciate the cost involved in coming to volunteer, to save you money we will organise your accommodation and transport on your behalf, as we are able to get local rates and pass these discounts onto you, rather than you paying the tourist prices. We have a range of great guesthouses that we deal with that give our volunteers very good discounts. To take up this offer just email us at volunteer@shcccambodia.org and we will send you a breakdown showing exact costs

What you can expect to pay for on top of airfares:

  • Accommodation - $6 - $12 per night including breakfast (depending on your comfort level)
  • Daily bike hire - $1 per day (moto or tuk tuk transportation is extra)
  • Lunches and drinking water on days at school - $2 per day
  • Airport pick up and drop off - $5
  • 2 SHCC t-shirts - $10

During your time here you will be assisted with whatever you need, welcomed into the community and made to feel at home. We encourage volunteers to immerse themselves in the culture as much as possible to get the most out of their experience.
